Daily Devo: June 29 Thinking Thursday

Contentment means "satisfied, not wanting more or anything else". It means the God fulfilled kind of enough.

Memory THIS week: The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. Psalm 138:8

It’s Thursday and that’s our thinking day. Time to stop, drop…to our knees, and meditate on the lesson God has rolled out before us so far this week.
When we look at developing an attitude of being thankful it’s more than a fake smile and using manners, it’s a changing of the heart. It’s seeing the world in a completely different way. It’s choosing to turn our feet, our eyes, and our hearts towards God whether storm or sunny day. It’s making a conscious choice every single day to see the world through Him rather than let the world dictate what we see. Having a foundation of understanding of true contentment is just part of beginning the journey to new godly habits. So, what is hardest for you about being content throughout your day? Where does your heart keep wandering? Is it hardship pulling you away? Is it a desire for more? Most of us, when we sit with ourselves alone, will grow uncomfortable as we try to settle in on the idea of just being content. The trick to figure out why. What is it that is being used to keep pulling us away? Today, ask yourself in various versions what Christ asked the eager follower to do, “sell all of your possessions and follow me” (remember possessions are anything that you hold dear). Honestly, could you? Is He enough yet?
I leave you with those thoughts and this last bit from Paul in Philippians 4:11-13
Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

We so often quote verse 13 to encourage ourselves and others, but we conveniently leave out the other 2 verses that taught him that very truth. He learned in any circumstance to be content as God provided for him and by that, he learned that he could do all things because it is God who strengthens him, fulfills him, and sustains him. It's in the mess and in the battle and in the trials that we are emptied of our own inflated sense of self-worth. It is in this place where we lean on God so much that our feeble brains finally realize just what "Solid Rock" really means because our legs are made of jello. Then, just like Paul, we realize we don't need to move mountains to see God work.We don't need to have a prison shaking earthquake. We know He CAN and that's enough. He strengthens us in His steadfast love and His grace each day and that is enough. He knows us better than anyone else and we know Him and that is enough. Suddenly the pieces begin to fall into places in our haphazard puzzle and we find that He fills each hole. Yes, indeed He is enough.
Have a blessed day and may the Spirit guide you in wisdom as you meditate on the Word today!
